Crafts Center
The Craft Center, which is located in the heart of Manama, is one of the significant buildings in Bahrain. It was originally built sixty years ago as the premises of the first technical school in Bahrain, and was partly renovated in 1990 to house the current craft center. The Center comprises twenty-seven (27) rooms of different sizes, which are given free of charge to craft men and women for a period of time.
There are twelve (12) projects in the Center, including
Hand-Made palm leaves paper
Stained Glass
Woodwork (3 Projects)
Gypsum (2 Projects)
Iron
Embroidery (Al Naqda)
Arabic Calligraphy
Environmental Products (Nature Whisper) which holds a morning café for traditional Bahraini breakfast
Nasaej for embroidery (A new project that will open officially in April 2003)
The Center gallery displays and sells the products of all these projects, plus the products of the wool wrapping project in Diraz village and the products of other artisans who work in their homes. There is also a wrapping corner in the Gallery.
The Library at the Center specializes in the craft field and it is open for artisans, students and scholars.
