The Kingdom of Bahrain realized the importance and the role of e-commerce & IT as early as 1999, but a specific focus on this area began with the establishment of the Directorate of eCommerce & IT at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in 2004.
The strategy of the Directorate was founded on the concept of supporting and strengthening the infrastructure for Electronic Commerce and Information Technology in the Kingdom of Bahrain in order to encourage and assist individuals, and the commercial and the industrial sectors, to use direct contact techniques to complete their daily transactions in a secure, fast and low cost manner over the Internet.
In that sense, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce through its official website: www.moic.gov.bh , has seen major developments over the years and has since added many online services to the public, including: commercial registration search, application follow-up, business activities requirements, daily price index, citizen complaints, as well as goods prices newsletter. Today it is possible to access those services from any smart phone through: www.moic.gov.bh/mobile
The Directorate of eCommerce and IT is also keen on strengthening its capacity to professionally meet the ever changing requirements of the commercial world, including efforts regarding the preparation and implementation of all legislations and laws related to Electronic Commerce and Information Technology in the Kingdom of Bahrain, including the decree Law No. 28 of 2002 on Electronic Transactions. The Department is also positioned to meet the developing Communication & IT infrastructure needs of the Ministry of Industry & Commerce.
The Directorate has also sought to launch and administer various programs in the area of Electronic Commerce and Information Technology and their applications, aimed at raising awareness of its importance, and as well as to set up different activities to enrich the electronic content of Bahrain in order to create components and programs for all local business, based on the historic role of the Kingdom as a regional hub for trade in the region.
It also provides the website of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce with the latest technologies so as to ensure its development and maintenance, in line with e-government initiatives in providing the finest electronic services to the public with a constant quest to renew the content of the website and add to its e-services.
We look forward to realizing greater electronic achievements in the coming years, God willing, in order to contribute to promoting e-awareness of the various electronic services for all sectors of the society in the Kingdom of Bahrain, as these sectors are the key beneficiaries of such services, since the government of the Kingdom of Bahrain strives to implement the directives of the wise leadership by encouraging citizens and residents alike to obtain public services through electronic channels by enabling them to complete their transactions related to government entities on their own via the Internet, instead of following the conventional methods which involves wasting time, money and effort. This comes in the context of pushing the Kingdom of Bahrain further towards the digital society.
